Cairns has sister city relationships with seven cities around the world. In the spirit of cultural exchange, our city offers this residency exchange program, for our local artists to visit and work in our sister cities and for artists in those cities to visit and work in Cairns. Please provide a rough timetable showing different stages of the residency

No. 5 Collins Avenue Edge Hill is a four-bedroom timber house, built in the traditional “Queenslander”architectural style with a large deck at the back and a lush garden. It includes an office/studio with telephone and wireless internet. It can sleep up to 5 people as afamily or in a share-house situation. It is in walking distance from the Tanks Arts Centre and adjoins thebeautiful Centenary Lakes parkland.

Cairns Performing Arts Centre Studio is a versatile space that can seat up to 372 peopleand can be reconfigured by the automated flooring system to create racked seating,standing room or a level floor for tables.

Tank 3 is a partially empty shell offering the flexibility for positioning of table setup (seats 350) and staging.

Tank 4 is a flexible exhibition space containing a flexible gallery area which can be utilised as one large space, or sectioned into a long gallery and two or three smaller corner galleries or artist studio spaces by use of movable display walls.

Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre is a modern multi-purpose space incorporating an outdoor undercover amphitheatre and an air-conditioned multi-purpose room.

Court House Gallery is an art gallery and performance venue in the centre of the city with a variety of different spaces to access.

The self-contained house at No. 5 Collins Ave, Edge Hill Cairns contains four bedrooms (some air-conditioned), an open plan kitchen and dining area, a bathroom and toilet, a furnished studio area for office based work and a large outdoor balcony. The house is fully furnished including: washing machine, television, kitchenware, linen, office desks, chairs and a work bench. There is a phone and an internet connection.Tenants will be expected to do their own house keeping, but the house will be visited by a janitor/cleaner once a week. 

 Applicants with family members will be considered, however, pets and other animals are not permitted.

TENANCY AGREEMENTS

Tenancy Agreements for periods of 2 weeks to 3 months may be entered into between the Tanks Arts Centre and artists participating in the Tanks multi-arts residency program. A minimum of 2 weeks will be charged for short stays. For artists being hosted by other organisations, the tenancy agreement must be made between the Tanks Arts centre and the host organisation. All rental fees must be paid in advance.

 Rate (per week): 

Residency accommodation per room/person $160.80 

Whole house residency accommodation (maximum 5 people) $267.80

The program’s objective is to offer a socially and creatively conducive environment in which artists can live and work; to attract professional and student artists and scientists from around the world to experience the region and exchange ideas. Cross-disciplinary interaction and collaboration is highly encouraged. Applicants may share the accommodation with other resident artists and/or scientists, though this is not enforceable.

The yard

The yard may be used for resident artists to build sculptural works.

The upstairs studio area

The studio space upstairs is only to be used by those in residence at the house.  In addition, it may not be considered the primary workplace for the work they are undertaking in the residency or research project they are engaged in.  Artist run workshops on- site, community meetings or using the work space for the purposes of conducting a business is also not permitted.

These restrictions do not prohibit residents from utilising the studio, or any other part of the house or yard for creative work that contributes to the body of work they are engaged in through their residency or research project.
