Delivered by Cairns Regional Council on a biennial basis, the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games is a major multi-sport event held in Cairns and Tropical North Queensland. The Games attract more than 2,500 athletes, competing across a wide range of individual and team sports.
The 2027 event features:
Masters Games generally cater to athletes aged 30 years and over, with a relatively balanced male and female participation ratio.

HOW TO BECOME A SPORTS ORGANISER?
Cairns Regional Council invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from local sporting organisations, clubs, associations and governing bodies to deliver sports at the 2027 GBRMG.
Following assessment of EOI, successful applicants will be offered a Sports Organiser agreement for the 2027 Games. Council will then work closely with each sport organsier to support promotion and drive participant registartions for their sport,
If, during the EOI assessment process, a conflict of interest arises or multiple organisations submit proposals for the same sport, a Request for Quote (RFQ) process may be issued to shortlisted applicants.
RESPONSIBILTY OF A SPORTS ORGANISER?
Sports Organisers are responsible for delivering a high-quality multi-day sporting event, including:
Presenting a competition with a minimum age requirement and appropriate age categories
Developing and managing the event schedule
Fully staffing the event across all competition days
Using intrastate, interstate and international networks to attract participants
Securing a venue that meets state championship standard (at the club’s expense) and liaising with Council where venues are Council-owned
Supplying all required equipment for the sporting event (at the club’s expense)
SUPPORT FROM COUNCIL
Cairns Regional Council will provide support including:
Promotion and marketing of the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games
Sport-specific advertising and promotional materials
Management of the registration system and collection of sport fees on behalf of sport organisier
Medals for place getters in each event
Event signage and Games branding
